Playa Dorada Introduction

Playa Dorada is located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic five kilometres east of Puerto Plato. The Dominican Republic has become a popular holiday destination because of its glorious sandy beaches and wonderfully clear waters, its mountains, rivers and waterfalls, and its saltwater lakes. Playa Dorado is a self-contained gated resort which is comprised of several separate complexes. The average temperature range is between twenty-eight and thirty-one degrees centigrade. The main tourist season is November to February and July and August. June to September is the hurricane season.

Playa Dorada - The Place

The beaches of the Dominican Republic are renowned for their quality and Playa Dorada is no exception. Located on the northern coast a short distance from Puerto Plato, this purpose built community is centred round two kilometres of white silky sand that gently slopes into warm turquoise waters. It is perfect for children and less confident swimmers. The translucent waters are ideal for snorkelling and diving and there are a host of other water sports to occupy the more active holidaymaker. These include paragliding, windsurfing and banana boat rides. On land, activities include horse riding, golfing and go-karting.

Playa Dorada hotels and apartments provide a high standard of care and comfort. The friendly service is excellent and the food is good. There are also cafes and restaurants serving a diverse cuisine and catering for most tastes. Although there are one or two lively bars, nightlife is fairly low-key where entertainment is provided by the hotel complexes. The larger hotels have discos and a couple host small casinos for those who enjoy a holiday flutter. There is also a small cinema.

Playa Dorada Nightlife

Playa Dorada nightlife is fairly low-key reflecting the resort’s popularity with families and couples. Although there are one or two lively bars, on the whole the hotels provide the evening entertainment with live shows and discos. Two of the larger hotels have small casinos.

Playa Dorada Shopping

Playa Dorada shopping is fairly limited with most hotels having their own gift shops. There is a small shopping centre in Plaza Playa Dorada where you will also find one or two retailers. If you are buying jewellery, you should look for larimar, the blue semi- precious stone that is only found on the island. When set in silver it is very pretty and fairly inexpensive. Amber from the Dominican Republic is considered the best in the world and there is a choice of colour from yellow to deep red and smoky green.

Since the majority of the hotels in Playa Dorada, there are only a small number of additional cafes and restaurants Nevertheless the variety of menu is excellent with the larger hotels having several a la carte restaurants. Traditional food in the Dominican Republic is similar to that in Central and South America. Rice, fish and vegetables are prepared simply with spices. Coconuts and coconut milk are frequent ingredients.
