Cheap Playa Del Cura Holidays

Find information on Playa Del Cura in our Travel Guide covering sights, foods and nightlife plus more...

Playa Del Cura Introduction

Playa Del Cura is a purpose built resort, just over one kilometre from Puerto Rico, on the south coast of Gran Canaria. The resort is built into the hills and cliffs so those with limited mobility must choose their hotel carefully. There are two small beaches comprised of pebbles and volcanic sand which is not the best sandcastle material. Care must be taken when bathing as strong ocean currents can catch swimmers unawares, with dire consequences. Playa Del Cura has a range of accommodation to suit all budgets and its restaurants cater for most tastes. There are shops for holiday provisions as well as the usual gifts and souvenirs. Nightlife is low-key but with Puerto Rico on the doorstep this matters little to those who wish to party through the night.

Why Go To Playa Del Cura?

A Playa Del Cura holiday offers warm year round sunshine in tranquil surroundings with two beaches and a variety of leisure activities on land and water. There are many attractions in the vicinity appealing to both adults and children. Hotels, bars, discos and restaurants in nearby Puerto Rico, provide the evening entertainment.

A Playa Del Cura holiday appeals to families with young children and couples of all ages. Those with mobility limitations need to be aware of the gradients in the resort and choose their accommodation carefully. There are many stepped walkways from the hotels and apartments on the hills. Ramblers enjoy the many coastal walks and cliff top trails.

When To Go To Playa Del Cura

A Playa Del Cura holiday can be taken at any time of year with its pleasantly hot summers and warm winters. There is very little rain in the south of the island.

Playa Del Cura - The Place

Playa Del Cura lies slightly west of Puerto Rico on the south coast of Gran Canaria and has a transfer time from the airport of one hour. It is a relaxed resort that offers a good range of high quality accommodation and restaurants providing a diverse cuisine. There are two coves in Playa Del Cura with volcanic sand and pebbles. As an ingredient, the pebbles would appear first on the list as there are more of them. Young children would find the beaches disappointing as the sand does not lend itself to castle construction or sand sculpture. However there are better beaches in Puerto Rico and in the surrounding area. When on the beach, it must be remembered that the water is a mighty ocean and there can be strong under currents. Extra care must be taken with children and all swimmers should swim parallel to the beach. Across the bay at Amadores is a sandy beach offering a wide range of water sports.

The ocean around Gran Canaria has ideal conditions for whale and dolphin spotting and for big game fishing where it is possible to catch blue marlins weighing hundreds of pounds.

Golfers will find an eighteen hole golf course close to the sand dunes in a nature reserve in nearby Maspalomas.

Many of the islands attractions are found near Playa Del Cura including the very popular Aqualand. With over thirty slides including the Anaconda and the Tornado it appeals to both children and adults alike. Here you can actually swim with the sea lions. Holiday World is a theme park with exciting rides.

Inland Gran Canaria is well worth exploring with its stunning scenery and charming old villages. Jeep safaris to Mount Tejeda are an ideal way to explore the island.

A Playa Del Cura holiday offers a degree of relaxation that is not found in the larger resorts. With an almost cast-iron guarantee of sunshine, even in the winter, visitors can relax around the pool or on the beach and enjoy the many recreational activities that are available in the area.

Playa Del Cura Nightlife

Playa Del Cura nightlife is fairly low-key reflecting the resort’s popularity with families and couples. The larger hotels provide evening entertainment. Those who wish for a livelier time can take a bus or taxi to Puerto Rico where they will find discos and bars that are open until dawn. There are many delightful restaurants where couples can enjoy an intimate meal under the stars.

Playa Del Cura Shopping

Playa Del Cura has a small commercial centre with shops for essential provisions as well as the usual gifts and souvenirs. Since one of the attractions of shopping in Gran Canaria is that goods are virtually tax free, a visit to Puerto Rico is recommended. The Centro Civico in Puerto Rico has a wide variety of shops and boutiques. Apart from the duty-free goods, popular purchases include leather items, pottery, wood carvings, jewellery, embroidered linens and handmade lace.

Playa Del Cura Eating

Playa Del Cura has a good number of restaurants serving a diverse cuisine that satisfies most tastes. Fish features prominently on menus, often accompanied by mojo, a spicy pepper salsa and salted potatoes. A good way to sample Spanish food is to order a plate of tapas which consists of a medley of bite-sized dishes. Tapas are also ideal for filling the sometimes long gap between lunch and dinner, which is served later in the Canaries than at home.

Children are always made very welcome in restaurants and their tastes and portion sizes are usually accommodated. Local wine is pleasant and inexpensive.
