Ellmau lies at an altitude of eight hundred and twenty metres beneath the magnificent Wilder Kaiser Mountains. The Ellmau ski season lasts from mid December until mid April. Although the resort lies at a fairly low altitude, at a little under one thousand metres, the highest skiing is over two thousand five hundred metres and has excellent snow cover throughout the season.

The pistes of the Ski Welter accommodate all levels of ability. Advanced skiers can find challenging slopes near the Hohe Salve summit and there are many testing off-piste runs. The funicular railway leads to some excellent red runs, ideal for intermediate skiers and beginners have a wide choice of slopes near the village and also in a high altitude plateau at the top of the Astberg chair lift. Ellmau is a good place to learn to snow board, as the local slopes are gentle. There is now a snow park with kickers and rails close to the Kaiserexpress lift.
